The 2019 Donald and Corinne Stork Award for Community Service was presented to Penn Yan resident Norm Koek on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Keuka College established the Stork Award to recognize those individuals who exemplify its historic commitment to the value and benefit of using individual initiative for the common good. The award is named after the first recipients, Penn Yan residents Corinne Stork and the late Donald Stork, who were honored in 1991.

“I always look forward to this day, as it brings home what a wonderful community we live in,” said Corrine Stork, in assisting to present the honor before a luncheon crowd of more than 115 at the College’s Geiser Dining Commons. “It is my honor and privilege to present this award to Norm Koek.”

Norm was recognized for his efforts on behalf of numerous Penn Yan-area organizations including decades-long memberships in the Penn Yan Fire Department, the Penn Yan Elks Club, and the Lions Club; longtime service as a statistician for Penn Yan Academy football; and volunteer work with the Penn Yan Honor Flight. Norm is also a member of the Penn Yan Moose Lodge and a past Village Board member.

“Being here with you today means more to me than you’ll ever know,” said Norm. “I am honored to receive this award, but my reward comes from working with the men and women of this community. My rewards come from hugs from people whom I’ve helped, and people who use the Outlet Trail and stop me to say ‘thank you.’ My rewards also come from helping with the Honor Flights, and seeing the veterans’ faces when people thank them for their service.”

In addition to the receiving the 28th annual award, Norm was recognized by state officials for his outstanding community service.State Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and state Sen. Thomas O’Mara co-sponsored a state Proclamation from the New York Legislature expressing “their collective appreciation, gratitude, recognition and tribute to Norm Koek.”
