A once-empty brick wall on Penn Yan’s Elm Street now features a vibrantly colored mural, thanks to the efforts of eight Keuka College students.

Reflecting their collective vision of Penn Yan's essence, the artwork weaves together elements of the town’s rich history, thriving businesses, agricultural heritage, and the scenic beauty that defines the area. The students used a Field Period® internship to create the mural.

“Our team spent so much time on this project,” said Cori Smith, a second-year Visual Communication Design major from Penn Yan. “To see it finally come to life and be so prominently displayed is a feeling of success and pride I’ve never experienced before. It’s awe-inspiring.”

Keuka College President Amy Storey commended the students on their work. “The mural is absolutely spectacular,” said President Storey. “I cannot imagine the countless hours that were dedicated to this project, and I am so proud of the work our students have done.”

Other students involved in creating the mural included:

  • Jayden Lannon, a third-year Art and Design major from Phelps, N.Y.;
  • Deanna Halflett ’24, an Art and Design major from Horseheads, N.Y.;
  • Morgan Farewell, a third-year Writing and Communication Arts major from Kirkville, N.Y.;
  • Luna Schultz, a second-year Art and Design major from East Greenbush, N.Y.;
  • Matthew Gosper, a second-year Visual Communication Design major from Springwater, N.Y.;
  • Mykaela Fuller, a third-year Art and Design major from Hudson, N.Y.; and
  • Cassian Allport, a third-year Art and Design major from Bloomsburg, Pa.

The students were led by Keuka College alumnae Sarah Tower ’22 and Sydnie Brown ’22.
