Sophomore Writing & Communication Arts major Gavin Gladstone’s recent Field Period® experience was a chance to refine his writing and gain a deeper understanding of the technical side of his craft.
Gaining Practical Experience in Writing
Working with Keuka College’s Marketing and Communications department, Gavin produced a number of emails intended for prospective students.
Subjects ranged from New York state’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), which opens doors to colleges for students who might not meet traditional admissions criteria, to student profiles and information about upcoming events.
This hands-on experience allowed Gavin to put his classroom lessons into practice, and the varied subject matter sharpened his research and writing skills.

“What I’ve learned through this experience is invaluable. I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the technical aspects of writing, and I’ve seen how much I’ve improved as a writer.”
A Glimpse into Professional Communications
Along with honing his writing abilities, the Field Period gave him a behind-the-scenes look at how communications work in a professional marketing environment. Collaborating with the team, Gavin learned how to craft messages that not only conveyed information but also helped engage prospective students, shaping their perceptions of the College.
"Working on these projects has shown me how impactful, clear, and concise communication can be,” Gavin said. “It’s exciting to see how my writing can contribute to the College’s efforts and connect with prospective students. This experience has given me a real sense of what it’s like to work in this field and how to approach professional writing with confidence.”
Building a Strong Portfolio
Another plus: The projects helped Gavin build a professional portfolio. With several professional communications to his credit, Gavin is already prepared to showcase his experience when applying for future Field Period internships or seeking employment after graduation. These writing samples will serve as tangible evidence of his skills, giving him a leg up in the competitive writing and communications field.
