What is there to do on the weekends?

Lots! There are athletic events, musical events, comedians and various entertainers brought to campus, as well as social events hosted by various clubs and campus groups, a movie theater in town, and different events in the downtown Penn Yan area. There are 1,100+ students to get to know — so there’s always plenty to do! For more about events, visit here.

How many people stay for the weekends?

The majority of students stay on campus, although some go home every now and then. Many of the students who leave campus on weekends are participating in athletic events, off-campus employment, or attending school-related activities.

How is the residence hall staffed?

Each floor of our traditional halls is typically staffed with at least one Resident Assistant (RA) who is responsible for individual floors. Each apartment area has a community assistant. Resident Assistant and Community Assistant positions are filled by upperclassmen who have been chosen because of their leadership ability. They receive special training in areas such as community building, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention.

Graduate Assistants are paraprofessional staff in place to assist with the administration of the halls and residence hall environments, and also to serve in the daily Graduate Assistant On Duty.

Area Coordinators are professional staff members and are responsible for the overall administration of these halls and serve as on-call administrators for the campus daily and after hours.

How do I go about changing my room?

Students are able to change rooms as space allows. If students are experiencing difficulty in establishing their roommate relationship, Resident Assistant and/or professional staff will mediate a discussion about the problems and possible solutions.

We believe that a large part of our responsibility as educators is to help students learn to communicate effectively and to appreciate people different from themselves. If this mediation is unsuccessful, we can then look at the availability of space and a room change could be an option. All room changes must be approved by the Office of Housing & Residence Life.

Are there any rules about off-campus housing?

Keuka College is a residential campus, and as such all students are required to live on campus through their senior year. Students who are eligible to live off campus may request off-campus housing, but must meet published requirements and deadlines. Late applications are accepted and reviewed when openings arise, but none are guaranteed.

How do I request a repair in the residence hall?

If a student needs to report a routine (non-emergency) repair, submit a Work Order and enter the appropriate information. For emergency repairs, contact your Resident Assistant, Resident Director or Campus Safety.

What is provided for me in my residence hall room?

Students are provided with standard furnishings: a dresser, a desk and chair, a bed frame, a mattress, a wardrobe/closet. Each room comes with standard overhead lighting, at least one window with blinds, and each student will have access to WiFi and Ethernet connection.

Who cleans my room?

Students are expected to clean their rooms. Housekeeping staff will clean the public areas (bathrooms, stairwells, hallway, and lounges). For buildings with carpeted rooms, vacuums are available through the Residence Life staff. With the exception of general wear and tear, students are expected to leave a room in the same condition as when they moved in. A Work Order can be generated for any damage that takes place during the semester.

Where can I do my laundry?

Each residence hall is equipped with washers and dryers located in the laundry rooms. There is no charge for laundry, it’s FREE!. There are instructions on how to operate the machines in each laundry room.

How is the food in the dining hall?

It’s good! We have a great variety, served by AVI Food Services in our main cafeteria, the Geiser Dining Commons, and the Wolf Den Café. Learn more about our dining services here.

Do I need to have a meal plan?

Keuka College believes that a residential college atmosphere offers unique opportunities for students. One of these is the sociability of coming together for meals. The College views meals as an important part of each student’s day, not only for nutrition, but also for personal growth through interaction with others.

All students living in residence halls must participate in a meal plan. Students living in the Strong Hall and Keuka Park Apartments, have the option of a modified meal plan to supplement home-cooked meals in their private kitchen.

What if I have a food allergy? What dining accommodations are made?

We will work with every student on ways they can customize their options to meet any dietary restrictions they have. If a student needs assistance, they should see the Office of Housing & Residence Life. This staff will coordinate with Dining Services and the Disability Services Coordinator to help a student create a plan and make accommodations for students with allergies and dietary restrictions.

In extreme circumstances, students may be given the option to downgrade their meal plan.

How is safety and security on campus?

Keuka College is extraordinarily safe. We have a staff of seven Campus Safety Officers that are all fully trained and licensed as required by New York State law. Campus Safety staff conducts both foot and mobile patrols of the entire campus year-round, 24 hours a day, to investigate, document, and report suspicious activities and crimes; deter unauthorized persons from entering, loitering, or soliciting in areas where they have no legitimate business; and provide escort/transport services for students, faculty, staff, and visitors upon request.

What is your policy on alcohol?

It is illegal in the state of New York for anyone under the age of 21 to possess, consume, or be under the influence of alcohol. It is illegal for students who are of age to sell or serve alcohol to minors.

Our policy supports this law but does allow students 21 and over to consume alcohol in on-campus residence halls and apartments under very specific parameters.

In addition, Keuka College upholds a town ordinance that prohibits drinking alcohol in public places.

What happens if I get in trouble? Will you tell my parents?

If you are involved in a situation in which policies may have been violated, you will have the opportunity to meet with a College staff member who is investigating the incident. Most cases are resolved at this level. If you don’t accept responsibility, the staff member will refer you for a conduct meeting. Keuka College believes it is good practice for students to have open communication with parents about their experience, and we always recommend that students talk to their parents about the disciplinary process. Parents are routinely notified of student involvement, generally following FERPA parameters.
