A small number of people can make a big difference in their community.
That fact will be highlighted in the next installment of the Dr. BettyLou Koffel ’74 Diversity Film Series.
“Strength Through Visibility: 20 Years of Pride in Jersey City,” chronicles the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in a New Jersey city and provides a blueprint for others seeking to establish Pride events in communities where there is little or no support.
The 45-minute documentary debuted last year and won the 2023 Garden State Film Festival Homegrown Documentary award.
“Strength Through Visibility: 20 Years of Pride in Jersey City” will be screened at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, in the Hawkins Lounge of the Dahlstrom Student Center. Immediately following the screening, an in-person Q&A session will be held with the film’s writer and director, Eduardo Baez.
Baez is a native New Yorker who moved to Jersey City in 2007. He runs the online Facebook group Gayborhood Jersey City, which he co-founded with his husband, Erik, in 2009. In 2014, he took over as the producer of the Jersey City LGBTQ+ Pride Festival, which has grown to more than 40 events throughout the month of August. He has spent more than 30 years helping to improve the lives of those living with HIV and those at risk. He currently works for the Northeast Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center.
Keuka College’s Diversity Film Series was launched in 2022 by College alumna Dr. BettyLou Koffel and her husband, Philip Moyer, to provide programming aimed at promoting engagement around issues of diversity and equity on campus.
