Athena Elafros is a qualitative cultural sociologist who studies cultural production, popular music cultures and the formation of ethnic communities. Prior to joining Keuka College, she taught courses at McMaster University and Alfred University. Her research utilizes a Bourdieusian perspective in order to examine musical communities in Toronto, Canada and Athens, Greece. She received her doctorate in Sociology in 2011 from McMaster University, her M.A. in Sociology from Queen's University and her B.A. in Sociology and Criminology from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral research was funded by a 2005-2009 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship and a 2008-2009 Category-C Postgraduate Research Scholarship from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. She has presented her research at numerous associations including, but not limited to, the International Sociological Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Canadian Sociological Association.
She has published on a variety of subjects, such as hip hop culture, popular music magazines, and gay-straight alliances. Her peer-reviewed publications include articles with Cultural Sociology, Poetics: Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, the Media and the Arts, Popular Music and Society, and co-authored articles with Social Sciences and the Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue Canadienne de Sociologie. Her research has also been published in Icons of Hip Hop: An Encyclopedia of the Movement, Music and Culture, edited by Mickey Hess, Hip Hop in Europe: Cultural Identities and Transnational Flows, edited by Sina A. Nitzsche and Walter Grünzweig, and she has a co-authored chapter in Race/Gender/Class/Media 3.0: Considering Diversity Across Audiences, Content, and Producers, Third edition, edited by Rebecca Ann Lind.
