Holland Patent High School Senior Selected Experiential Learner of the Year

Holland Patent resident Matthew Connell, a senior at Holland Patent High School, is the first recipient of Keuka College’s Experiential Learner of the Year Award.

Connell will receive a full tuition fellowship to Keuka.

Since September, the College has presented Experiential Learner of the Month Awards to high school students from across New York state. The eight recipients, who all received partial tuition fellowships to the College, qualified for the Experiential Learner of the Year Award.

Keuka, the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning, established the program to honor high school students whose commitment to experiential, hands-on learning has made a difference in their communities.

One of the people nominating Connell for the award was Carol Zaleski, a special education teacher at Holland Patent.

“Matt works very hard in his academic subjects and is extremely involved in extracurricular and non-academic activities,” said Zaleski. “He has volunteered extensively at the high school during study hall, after school and even during vacations.”

Zaleski said Connell “completes all his tasks accurately and in a timely manner with a minimum of supervision.”

Connell tutors learning-disabled students at his local elementary school and volunteers in the religious education program at St. Leo’s Church in Holland Patent.

The Experiential Learner of the Month Award-winner has been featured on television stations throughout central, western, and northern New York state, as well as the Southern Tier.

The participating stations include WTVH, Channel 5, Syracuse (CBS); WROC, Channel 8, Rochester (CBS); WKBW, Channel 7, Buffalo (ABC); WWNY, Channel 7, Watertown (CBS); and WBNG, Channel 12, Binghamton (CBS).

Keuka College is the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning.
