Keuka China

Overview

Keuka College and the People's Republic of China

Of all the U.S. colleges offering degree programs in China, Keuka College boasts the largest enrollment.

Keuka began offering its bachelor of science degree in management in China in 2002 and today some 4,700 Chinese students are working toward their Keuka degrees at four universities: Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Wenzhou University, Jimei University, and Yunnan University of Finance and Economics.

Although China is a communist country, it is embracing new ideas such as free Keuka College students in Chinaenterprise and individual opportunity. And Keuka College, the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning, did its part by introducing one of its staples, Field Period (required internship program), to its Chinese students.

The Chinese are enamored with the Field Period concept, of taking what they have learned in the college classroom and applying it to real-life situations. As in the U.S., Field Period is a way for students to become more competitive in the job market. Chinese businesses are receptive to Field Period and American companies in China should also find it appealing.

And with thousands of American companies operating in China, Keuka College seems primed to have a positive impact on two of the most powerful economic forces in the world.

Students pursuing Keuka degrees in Keuka Park have reaped many benefits from the College’s presence in China.

Thirteen students conducted their January 2006 Field Periods in the country. Six were stationed at the Beijing Children’s Home, an orphanage that also provides medical treatment to children from all over northern China, and seven helped establish a Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team at Yunnan University of Finance and Economics in Kunming.

The players stayed on the campuses of the schools that offer Keuka degrees and soaked up plenty of Chinese culture while visiting many historic sites.

But Keuka students don’t have to travel to China to get a taste of the language and culture. The College offers INS 295: An Introduction to Chinese Culture, Society and Language. The course is the result of growing public interest in China and the College’s international business program. It is taught by Zhao Yang, who came to Keuka College from Qiqihar University in China, where she worked with the Keuka China Program and taught for several years.
